According to French Impressionist artist Edouard Manet, “colour is a matter of taste and sensitivity” and this is true whether you’re choosing colours for cake decorating or for your clothes. However, taking the next step and becoming more adventurous in your colour choices can be challenging without the right guidance. Creative Colour for Cake Decorating, the new book by sugarcraft doyenne Lindy Smith, is the perfect choice to help you be more colour confident. Whether you’re creating a cake to wow friends and family, for a wedding or special celebration, Creative Colour for Cake Decorating will help you become a culinary artist.
Packed with helpful information on how to choose and mix colours successfully, as well as ten stunning new cake decoration projects to try, Creative Colour for Cake Decorating is like having Lindy in the kitchen next to you helping you every step of the way. For each new project there is a colour mixing guide to show you how to achieve specific colours and the Paste Colour Index at the front of the book will also help you when mixing colours for your own creation.
Lindy Writes: "From as long ago as I can remember I have been drawn to colour in all its fascinating shades, tones and combinations. Colour is all around us, it creates moods and feelings, it excites and inspires. As a designer, I love experimenting with new colours and colour combinations so I’m always looking for new inspiration. The colours I choose for a design can be inspired from literally anywhere: The iridescent colours of a butterflies wing, the subtle colours on delicate flower petal, the experimental colours from a piece of high fashion clothing, the fabulous rich colours of a plush cosy cushion, the complimentary colours of a stunning birthday card, the list is endless. I love the fact that colours and how they are used go in and out of fashion, it means that there are always new colours and colour combinations to excite and inspire me, not all will necessarily look good on cakes but I’ll have fun experimenting.
Using colour is very natural for me, but I know from my students that many people find colour confusing and difficult. My intention with this book is to give my readers the confidence they need to use colours in new and exciting ways on their cakes. The introduction section explains the basics of colour theory, as this is an excellent stating point for understanding colours and how to combine them. I have then created ten detailed cake decoration projects, where I have found a colour inspiration that appeals to me and used it to select the colours for the cake. For some of the projects I have kept the colour balance very similar to the inspiration but not always, sometimes I have replicated every colour sometimes not, in order to demonstrate a few of the different approaches you too can take.
I hope you find this book an inspiration and that it helps you make new and exciting colour discoveries of your own."
