Yesterday I took the main cake jewellery cakes from my cake jewellery gems DVD to be professionally photographed. It was such a lovely day that we decided to create a lifestyle shot of one of the cakes and enjoy the sunshine at the same time….lovely! Getting set up always takes ages. Here is Vicki in action, ascertaining the best angle to shoot from.
A great tip I picked up, which you also may find useful, is when photographing objects in full sun you get a much better 3D effect if you angle the camera at 90° to the sun. It’s amazing the difference it makes, when the sun is behind you the cake looks quite flat but as soon as you move around, the shadows instantly create a much more interesting and attractive picture.
Another tip: If you are planning to photograph cakes in bright sunlight be careful not to leave them there too long as coloured paste will quickly fade!!
The other two shoots were taken indoors, one in a lifestyle setting the other a studio shot. I’m always amazed how much better the cakes look when they are professional photographed compared to what I can achieve with my own camera – it’s the lighting and use of shadows that makes all the difference.
I can’t show you the finished cakes just yet, but don’t worry it won’t be that long now until the DVDs are available.
