Putting sugarpaste aside for a few days, we are just back from a 2-day modelling workshop. Our theme was Bride & Groom cake toppers, wonderful characters to place on the top of a wedding cake. Lindy has been creating cake toppers for quite some time now. Orginally Lindy used sugar but today she uses a soft, super lightweight, modelling clay called Artista Soft. Lindy begins the class with a lesson in deconstructing bodies! In some ways this is the most important part of this art form because getting the body shapes right is crucial. She spent quite a lot of time explaining modelling ‘biology’ !! For any further ‘dressing’ to work well on a model it is important to get the body shape and proportions just right. Observing this workshop there is something amusingly macabre about the early stages of this course; heads on sticks, torsos with limbs missing, legs attached to nothing, bald heads, smiles with no eyes…. !!
Lindy holds this course over 2 days because there is quite a lot of work involved. On day one we concentrated on the technical information and forming the body: torso, limbs, heads and faces. These are then left to dry overnight. Day two focuses on the dressing of the models. The wedding gowns, suits, crevats, flowers, diamantes, embossing and hair. This is when the models start taking on the personality, and look, that their creator is hoping for. Students are encourraged to come along with photo’s of brides & grooms, magazine cuttings or indeed model the figures on themselves!
The students did a fantastic job on this course. It is intense and there is a lot to take in over 2 days, but Lindy teaches at a pace that is managable. Lindy demonstrates step-by-step, giving the students the chance to complete each stage as it is learnt. And with help on hand from Lindy’s workshop team there is always someone with you if you need extra help. This teaching process gives Lindy the chance to work closesly with her students which is very important to her.
As you can see the results are super. These Bride & Groom Toppers make quite a line up. They are a forever keepsake of a special couple. A handmade treasure. Well done everyone, you did yourselves proud!
