Love is in the air… a love of sugarcraft that is! We have had the most wonderful day at Lindy’s Floral Heart Cake workshop today, and I can vouch for this because today I became one of Lindy’s students! I am nicknaming this particular class the ‘Learn & Laugh’ class because it was an absolute hoot! There was such a lovely atmosphere today, which is powerfully conducive to learning, and I came away thinking I must do this more often.
This is a superb course for beginners (me!) and confident (everyone else!) sugarcrafters alike. It is a cake ‘carving’ course which adds another dimension to your cake decorating. Creating a ‘pillowed’ shape heart is not easy but Lindy truly has perfected the ‘Lindy’ technique and teaches this with aplomb! As with all of Lindy’s classes she starts with the basics. I have worked with Lindy long enough now to know that she has great tips in all areas of sugarcrafting. I can give you the ‘KiwiRachel’ guarantee that, even if you are an experienced sugarcrafter, you will learn some great tips with Lindy.
We talked a lot about handling sugarpaste and the baking of the cake. Refreshingly everyone came with pretty decent looking Madeira cakes so we were able to get stuck in quite quickly. The carving of the cake takes time. It is a skill and it isn’t easy but Lindy and the team are with you every step of the way. Like anything, practice makes perfect. Lindy whips around her cake like ‘Edward Scissorhands’ making it look so easy!! The lovely thing about a class setting is that you have time to take it slowly while Lindy guides through. And given that Lindy holds small classes she will give you one to one attention throughout the day. I was really impressed with the shape of everyone’s cakes. Ok, so mine needed a little ER style cake surgery but nothing that a lovely piece of rolled sugarpaste won’t hide!! All in all the girls carved good!
After lunch, where we sat outside under a lovely old tree ~ idyllic, we moved on to the covering and decorating of our hearts. This is where the class gets all colourful and even more buzzy as we chat about our design ideas. Lindy gave us a fab tip for choosing colours. Find a pattern or a picture that you like and use the same colour selection. With this fresh in my mind I was suddenly inspired by my friend Sally’s apron and added a colour to my selection that I hadn’t thought about before. It really worked and bought the colours alive. Lindy showed us how to use a sugar shaper, floral cutters and dresden & ball tools for creating flowers, lines and shapes.
This is what we created…
I think Julie Elveson captured the essense of the day in this comment on our facebook page…
“We baked, we drove, we went, we carved , we covered, we laughed and I’ve had one of the best days of my life! Thankyou Lindy, Sally and Jane ♥ I’ve got cake but they’re not cutting it… Julie x
