Haute Couture comes to Lindy’s Cakes… in the form of handbags! This new workshop, designed by Lindy, was a ‘runway’ success today! Whilst we love our regular workshops, and there will always be themes that are old favourites, it is lovely to work in a new direction. And ‘fashion’ is definitely a new direction for Lindy. Edible handbags…food and fashion fusion…surely that’s the ultimate!
Lindy started the workshop, as always, talking about the basics of working with sugarpaste and how to get the best out of the ‘baking’ of your cake. As this is an intermediate class Lindy was able to move fairly quickly through these topics, but they are important for all levels none the less. Carving is a big focus on this course. Step by step with Lindy at your side you will learn the art of carving a curvy, plumped up shape. This is crucial for your handbag to look realistic. It is not easy, and this section of the course is by far the most challenging, but in a class situation there is a team of people that can guide you, or at the very least, encourage you as you work. Lindy has developed an excellent way of teaching carving.
Once the cake is carved Lindy moved on to the covering and decorating of the handbag. We bought along a collection of photographs of the most stunning, eye wateringly expensive, bags OTM (of the moment!) For they are as beautiful as they are inspiring. These really did get the creative juices flowing. The covering of the handbag in sugarpaste is done in several stages. As you would with a leather handbag, pieces are cut and placed together. There is even stitching detail on this cake handbag! Ah the joys and versatility of sugarpaste!! Once covered we moved on to decoration. Today Lindy introduced a new product that we are stocking at Lindy’s cakes: impression moulds. These create the most beautiful flower shapes and are so easy to use! Today Lindy used these to make the clasp for her demonstration handbag! Some students were happy to leave their bags fairly simple, others were keen to place some detail on. After all, in fashion, its about taste and style.
‘Fashions fades, style is eternal‘ – Yves Saint Laurent
‘Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening’ – Coco Chanel
Cake handbags make their debut at Lindy’s Cakes. We are thrilled with the results and think our students did a super job! Well done ladies! They are so real looking… just don’t try and pick one up!!
Great news…there is another handbag course in our Autumn Workshop Collection. Join us!
