Wonky cake classes are one of our most popular workshops and Friday’s class was no exception, in fact we’ve never had such a long waiting list! Students travelled from far and wide, including one international student from Italy, many were familiar faces but we also welcomed some new students as well.
Wonky cakes, for many, are the ultimate cake challenge, not only does the cake shape have to be correct but the covering is also a little trickier than for most other shapes. The approach I take is to spend time explaining and demonstrating the carving of the cakes in bite-sized stages – this helps to ensure that everyone’s cake, slowly but surely, takes on the characteristic wonky shape.
After a short lunch break it’s the part that the some students find the most taxing – the covering. The secret is to work quickly and efficiently, not the easiest thing to do on your first attempt however with a little help all the cakes were covered. What a difference colour makes! I always encourage students to experiment with colour, as you never know what you may discover, one of the popular discoveries in this class was how well black, white and ivory go together – Fabulous, I must try this combination on one of my cakes!
Wonky cakes take time and so if some of the students do manage to add decorations to their cakes it is a real bonus. Today’s students did really well but we can’t wait to see the finished cakes!!! Remember to send us your pictures girls or upload them onto our Facebook page
If you’d like to join us on our next wonky course on Friday 4th February 2011 then click here we look forward to welcoming you.
