To Lindy, cake decorating is where her creative passions become poetic. Her sugarcraft designs always stem from something she’s seen. It could be a particular shape, a textured pattern or colour scheme that has caught her eye or a perhaps a particular place she’s visited or a page in a magazine.
Inspiration a vital part of the design process
The real magic begins as she applies those ideas and inspirations to create something unique and edible – a cake. Inspiration is such an important part of the design process. Indeed, artists of all kinds take inspiration from others and their environments. The Romantic poet Wordsworth wrote much of how nature and the countryside moved him, declaring that ‘place is a receptacle of feeling’ – his inspirations were mountains, lakes and an infamous field of daffodils, which moved him to write some of the most often quoted lines in poetry.
Lindy’s species rose stencil
Lindy loves to design stencils, as stencilling is such a simple yet effective way to adorn a cake or cookie. Her Species Rose Stencil is one such example. Lindy was looking for inspiration in her garden when she noticed the beauty and simplicity of her species rose bush. What better plant to use to cover a cake top in a shower of flowers?
The resulting stencil has proved very popular with Lindy’s customers and students alike. Many of Lindy’s students have enjoyed experimenting with colour by creating striking effects with this stencil. Here is one of Lindy’s decorated shoe cookies, a rose stencil sugarcraft inspiration we particularly like.
Lindy continues to work her magic by using her stencils imaginatively, stencils can be used in many different ways, taking a larger stencil to create detail on smaller cupcakes or cookies for example. For more details and step by step instructions on how to stencils your cakes and cookies why not invest in a copy of Lindy’s Contemporary Cake Decorating Bible – you’ll find a whole chapter dedicated to this fascinating subject.
