Lindy’s annual bride and groom cake toppers class
In the glorious shabby chic venue of the Lady Gray tearooms, in Wendover, I sit amongst beautiful vintage furniture, a stunning chandelier, bunting and naked bodies!! Luckily they are made of Atrtista Soft so it’s not embarrassing at all. It’s that time of year when Lindy holds her annual Bride & Groom Topper course. We really look forward to this 2 day course…we all love a wedding and this course, which Lindy traditionally holds early in the year, marks the start of the wedding season. Many of our students and cake friends get involved in Wedding treats, be it a cake or wedding favours, so we always get a wonderful response to wedding themed courses.
Our students come from far and wide
Today we are joined by seven students from as far away as Aberdeen and as close as Oxfordshire. We have four new cakes friends and three that we have welcomed before. I love looking at all the picture inspiration particularly the wedding dresses. We even have a kilted groom being created on this course… loving the sporran!
Introducing Artisita Soft modelling medium
Lindy has created this step-by-step class to incorporate the meticulous colouring of the Artista, the modelling of the body, as well as dressing the figure. Day one: it does feel as if you don’t get very far and it is the most unglamourous part of the course – it’s all about limbs, heads and body parts. Day two is all about creativity and beauty. This is the day when the couture designer starts to emerge in our students and believe me wedding dresses do have their fashion moment. As do flowers! We were just discussing how the latest trend in wedding bouquets is the hand-tied bouquet and small posy which our students are opting for today except Rosheena who has done a classic tear drop shape.
The all important wedding dress
The wedding dress takes centre stage and involves the most thought and making. It’s the same with our ‘topper’ brides. Our students have spent a lot of time getting their ‘fabric’ drapes perfect and embossing their modelling paste to give the effect of lace or texture on the fabric. Jolasun has created a lovely fabric collar for her bride. Elspeth has added Japanese Rocailles to her dress for added glam and Fiona has used Swarovski crystals for bling and sparkle. I love Ali’s two-toned waistcoat and Susan G’s fishtail frills. They look fabulous.
Fiona’s kilted groom is elegant and unique…and guess what I know what’s under that kilt!! I also like Elspeths brides hair, an elegant chignon and Susan P’s highlighted hair with tiara. Rosheena has stuck pretty beads in her purple haired brides hair and it looks groovy. We have elaborate cravats being tied around grooms necks and sweet little handkerchiefs being popped into the grooms top pocket and button hole flowers for some. Cake toppers looking super ladies!
Wedding colour choices
The cake topper colour choices are always interesting. Lindy has taken inspiration from a Californian beach wedding she saw featured in a magazine, a great media for inspiration. The colours are vibrant oranges, peaches and tangerines… the colours of an Ibiza sunset. While the students have opted for grooms in violet, deep purple, burgundy and lime green. An array of pinks. purples, yellows and creams for the flowers.
Bride & Groom cake toppers are bespoke, personal and can be modelled on a particular couple. Wedding dresses can be re-created, as can the flowers, and the grooms suit. Although caricatures these toppers certainly do resemble the intended bride & groom, if that was what you are aiming for. They are fun and amusing… a wonderful keepsake for this special event. Cake toppers last forever… hopefully as long as the marriage itself!!
