As regular readers of this blog know, I don’t just write about cakes and cake decorating. This world we live in is a fascinating, inspiring place and by sharing what intrigues me, I hope in turn will inspire you. ‘C is not just for cake’ was a short speech I presented yesterday at my local Toastmasters club meeting. My objective was to tell my audience three things about me that they didn’t already know. I thought you might be interested to hear what I revealed.
C is for Curiosity
Have you ever been told that you have a doppelganger? A week or so ago, I gave a talk and cake decorating demonstration, to the North Shropshire girl guide leaders. Afterwards, a lovely lady came bounding up to me and said ‘Lindy my best friend is your exact double, she’s your doppelganger’. This lady went on to explain that her friend looked like me, sounded like me and had the same mannerisms as me! The only difference apparently was that I was slightly taller.
Now, this is not the first time I’ve been told I have a doppelganger. When my children were small, I was introduced to a friend of a friend who, I was told, was my doppelganger. We were remarkedly similar, we had the same hairstyle and were dressed in almost identical clothes. It felt rather bizarre. Being reminded of this incident made me curious. So curious that I typed doppelganger into Google and found that the internet is full of examples of people that look like one another but are not genetically related. Apparently, the probability of two unrelated people being the same as each other is so infinitesimally tiny that the figure has never been calculated. And yet, many very similar people exist. Do you have double? Are you curious to find out?
I love being curious, it’s how I discover unexpected things. But now it’s time to move on and discover another reason why for me, C is not just for cake.
C is for Creativity
I have just agreed on the publication date for my next cake decorating book, my sixteenth. This means I must now focus on being highly creative. I must dream up designs and projects that are new, one of a kind, works of edible art. It’s an exciting prospect.
In order to create these designs, I will need to turn the metaphorical creativity switch, in my brain, up a notch. Then ‘step’ into a place where I can let ideas, inspiration, concepts and colours come and go. A place where I can reach out and grab what inspires me. A place where I can meld these ideas together to see what happens, what I can create. I know from experience that this can be utterly exhausting yet truly exhilarating. It’s a place where time and the outside world ceases to exist. I look forward to entering but also hesitate. I know sometimes it’s magnetical draw can be difficult to escape. For me, however, it is the best way I know of coming up with unique designs. Designs that I hope will appeal to my potential readers, designs that make you say ‘wow… I want to have a go at that!’
I adore using my creativity to the full it gives me a real thrill, but I now need to move on to my last reason why C is not just for cake.
C is for a Can-do Attitude
I will try most things, within reason, at least once. Recently two dear friends persuaded me to join them in an exercise cum dancing class. Now, this was no ordinary class. No, this class involved a metal pole fixed between the floor and ceiling of a dance studio. The class involved walking around the pole and then wrapping our legs around said pole and spinning. Yes, you’ve guessed it! I was persuaded to go pole dancing. Never in my wildest dreams have I ever imagined I’d try pole dancing. We laughed and laughed – what a fabulous tonic on a Friday evening. I even learnt that bruises are not bruises but ‘pole kisses’ and that I prefer performing a stripper spin to a fireman’s spin.
Having a can-do attitude certainly makes life more interesting.
C is for Cake
In my world C definitely does stand for cake.
But as you have read above, C is not just for cake, it’s also for curiosity, creativity and a can-do attitude. If you’d like to discover more about what I have to say about these topics, take a look at the ‘you may also like…’ blog selections below:
