Basics of baking: How to line a round cake tin

4th October 2020 by Lindy Smith

Are you struggling to line your round cake tins? My daughter Charlotte, tells me she can never remember how it’s done! If this is you too, let me demystify the art how to line a round cake tin. It’s not really as difficult or time-consuming as you may think.

baking basics - how to line a round cake tin

There are a number of approaches that you can take but this is the one I’ve always used when baking deep round cakes. It works a treat and should give your cake nice straight sides – ideal for decorating.

To line a round cake tin you will need

  • Baking paper or baking parchment
  • The round cake tin you wish to use – I use professional heavy-weight 7.5cm (3in) deep Invicta tins
  • Scissors, ideally large
  • Pencil

Once you have everything to hand, simply follow my video below. If you have any further questions, after watching, let me know and I’ll do my best to help.

Top tips when lining tins

The cutting of your paper doesn’t need to be exact, but it is important that the ends of the baking paper overlap once in the tin and that the paper is taller than the tin’s top edge.

Also make sure when tipping your cake batter into the tin, that the baking paper remains flush with the sides of the tin. It shouldn’t buckle and come away from the sides. If it does the sides of your cake, once baked, will not be straight. In my opinion, it’s much better to perfect the sides of a cake before it is baked, rather than trying to rectify a wonky shape later on!
