DVD Filming – Day Two – Wonky Cakes

5th April 2009 by Lindy Smith

Day two of filming and this time it was Wonky Cakes, my signature cake shape. I made my first wonky wedding cake for my brothers wedding back in 2003. Back then, the internet was a fairly new tool, so globally each country still had their own distinct recognisable style of cakes. At the time we were planning his cake, I had just obtained a couple of Australian wedding cake magazines, which I thought amazing as they contained all sorts of ideas and styles that I’d never seen in the UK. I particularly like the cakes with slanted tops so persuaded my brother that he’d really like to be a little adventurous and have a cake based on this idea – My Charlie’s sunflower cake was the result and the wonky cake was born….!

Day two was a beautiful sunny day, which made the drive to the filming kitchen very enjoyable, however it was more of a challenge for the film crew as sunlight flooded the kitchen. They were of course well prepared, so a few well positioned large cards and a black fleece over the skylight seemed to do the trick!

Lights, cameras and action…..we were off again!

Carving cake on camera is not something I’ve done before and I found it very difficult to remember to look up at the camera, I was so absorbed in what I was doing……but a few friendly prompts helped – you should now be able to see more than just the top of my head!
Spot the scallops on this wonky cake – yes I do listen…..and I will be revealing how its done, but you’ll have to buy my DVD to find out!

Wonky cakes are not straight forward, so I knew that it would take time to explain, carve and cover the demonstration cake let alone the troubleshooting and decorating sections. However I needn’t have worried, we actually finished earlier than on day one! Sally was a massive help, some of you may have met her at my workshops, she was there as my second pair of hands to fetch and pass me everything I needed. She is also now the first person to have ever contributed to the decoration of one of my cakes! Sally made a whole host of plunger flowers to go on the demonstration cake allowing me to have an early night – Thank you Sally, I so needed it!

    Hi Elizabeth
Thank you for your enthusiastic comments. I am finding that many of our pre-order DVD sales have been to my students – I guess its because you all more or less know what you will be getting!!! Thank you for your support. I watched the rough cut of the wonky DVD last night…. it’s so exciting!
    Best wishes

I’m off to buy my wonky cake DVD now, cant wait to try it out! Does it say where or how to get a tall cake?

    Hi Robyn
My wonky cakes are made using standard 3in (7.5cm) high cakes, they are then carved so that the cakes become 4in (10cm) high. You can always stack shallower cakes before carving however I’d advise freezing them before carving so that the cake is firm.
    Hope this helps
