Introduction to Celebration Cakes

2nd February 2010 by Lindys Team

Our spring workshops are well underway, and no set of cake class themes would be complete without the Introduction to Celebration Cakes. This is the ultimate course for the novice sugarcrafter. It is basic cake covering at it’s best, the humble beginnings of sugarcrafting. For if you can master this then you really are on the way to being able to create super cakes with sugarpaste!

It was a lovely surprise to find that we had a group of students who were really quite capable.  It was an even nicer surprise to find that we had a selection of fairly normal, uniform, properly baked cakes! Trust me it’s not always the case, not that it phases Lindy and the team because we have just about seen it all… we think!  But to be able to get on with the class without any ‘ ER ‘ style cake surgery was refreshing indeed!

This is the course that takes you right back to basics: handling sugarpaste, kneading, colouring, rolling, smoothing, preparing the cake, placing the sugarpaste on the cake,  and adorning the cake. You have to know these techniques to achieve a professional finish and with Lindy, you are in the right class to get there. Lindy also guides you through a selection of decorative techniques. It gives you the chance to not only be creative but to give your cake it’s uniqueness. No two cakes are ever the same and it’s a joy to see…

A gorgeous collection of cakes!

The students did incredibly well achieving a very good standard of finish. Not bad for a ‘beginners’ course.  Well done ladies this could be the start of something really quite sweet indeed!

I didn’t realise it on the day but all the students on this workshop used pastel colours! Those of you that are familiar with my work will know that I tend to flavour strong colours, so I though you may be interested to see the cake that I covered and decorated at this workshop.
    Tristan's 15th Birthday Cake
After cake classes, such as this one, it can sometimes be a problem for me to know what to do with the cake – this may sound odd to you but it’s true!- However my sons birthday was a few days after this class and as family birthdays and book deadlines don’t mix, he had to have a class cake! Tristan chose the red and black colours… and I had the challenge of making a class cake suitable for him. Thankfully he was delighted!
