It was cupcakes galore on Friday and a fabulous day was had by all! There was a complete mix of students, from total beginners making their first forays into the world of cake decorating to experienced students with City and Guilds cake decorating qualifications. However as you can see below everyone produced a fantastic array of decorated cupcakes. Perfect for baby showers.
In Australia these are also known as Patty Cakes and in England we also know them as fairy cakes.

I have always preferred to decorate my cupcakes with sugarpaste, so for this class, as we find many students have already dabbled with buttercream toppings, I concentrated completely on sugarcraft techniques that I like to use on my own cupcakes.
Initially everyone created decorations using simple cutters and a ball tool and then we moved on to using a range of other interesting and useful techniques including moulds and embossers.
I love workshops as often I too can experiment with colours, designs and ideas whilst I demonstrate. I am particularly pleased with how the two embossers on the front cupcake turned out. I used set 15 wedding embossers and one of the Patchwork Crowns elements. I hope they inspire you to also be creative.

Do you just cut out a circle of sugar paste and put on top of the cupcake? Do you stick it with butter cream? They look fab……
Lindys Team says
Hi Tina,
Yes you cut out the circle of sugar paste and place it on top of the cupcake. As the cupcake is moist you don’t have to use anything, however you can if you wish. More details on buttercream, ganache, sugar syrups e.t.c. are in Lindy’s book Cupcake Celebebration: http://www.lindyscakes.co.uk/bakemeimyourscupcakecelebration.htm

Hello,
I was wondering whether I could have your advice.
I have been asked to cater for a baby shower for a friend – she is expecting 60 guests. How many cakes should I make and how long will it take to decorate such a large number? Any baby cutters you could recommend?
Lindys Team says
Hi Sally,
For the baby shower we would recommend baking a few more than the 60 needed for the guests, just in case some of them don’t work out as well as the others.
The cupcakes do dry out quite quickly, so we recommend making the decorations first and then baking and adding the decoration a day or so before they are due to be eaten.
These cutters and embossers look great on cupcakes:

We recommend having a few practise runs first and hope that the baby shower is great fun.
