We are often asked how to create the sugarpaste colours featured in Lindy’s ‘Pastel Flower Tower’ wonky cake – the one that’s featured on the front cover of her ‘Cakes to Inspire and Desire’ book.
There are two approaches to getting the right coloured paste – full details given below.
To create the coral pink colour:-
Either – mix M&B bright pink and orange sugarpaste then use a little white sugarpaste to tone down the colour, if desired.
Or – mix Squires Kitchen rose and nasturtium paste colours into white sugarpaste.
Or – mix Sugarflair ruby and peach paste colours into white sugarpaste.
To create the lime green colour:-
Either – mix M&B mid green and lemon sugarpaste again tone down the colour with a little white
Or – mix Squires Kitchen fern and daffodil paste colours into white sugarpaste
Or – mix Sugarflair gooseberry and melon paste colours into white sugarpaste
When colouring sugarpaste using paste colours, it helps to smear some white vegetable fat (eg white flora or trex) onto your hands to help stop your hands becoming too stained with dye! Add just a little paste colour at a time and knead it in. Keep adding until you get the colour you require – it can take some time to get the colour you are looking for, especailly if you’ve been a bit heavy handed with the paste colour!
TIP: Once you happy with the colours you’ve produced, wash your hands with real/bar soap not a hand wash gel.
We sell a comprehensive range of both Squires Kitchen and Sugarflair colours via our online shop and M&B sugarpaste is available for collection for local customers and our workshop students.
Have fun colouring!

I am often asked this but as yet I’ve not found one I can recommend – does anyone else?

I have seen one that uses meringue powder and water instead of egg whitea

I am making a wedding cake for my brother and his fiance. She has requested purple sugarpaste. I have asked her to get a paint colour chart indicating her preferred colour so I have something to work to. Can you advise on colour paste combinations to get a purple colour. I am thinking of making my own sugarpaste as I am worried about kneading such a large quantity to get the colour I am looking for – I have arthritis. Is it wise to attempt colouring while making the sugarpaste in my Kenwood or should I just face the fact I will have to do lots of kneading after it is made? I have never tried making sugarpaste myself before.

Hi Gwen,
I would have a go practising using different colours and techniques until you get the colour your soon to be Sister in Law likes.
Lindy’s website sells many different paste colours, including Lilac, Violet and Plum. These may be the right colour or very near it.
